AUGUSTA — Joe Higgins, off-road vehicle program supervisor with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, was recognized by the Maine Snowmobile Association for his dedication and commitment to quality snowmobiling in Maine.
Higgins is starting his 15th year with program, the bureau said in a news release, and has been involved in snowmobiling for 40-plus years. He belonged to a local snowmobile club, and groomed and maintained trails prior to working for the Program.
Higgins works to help provide more than 14,000 miles of interconnected trails statewide, and more than 310 miles of multi-use rail trails, the release said. He serves as a liaison to snowmobile clubs, municipalities, and private landowners, as well as administering grants to clubs and municipalities.
He lives in Fairfield with his wife and two daughters, and has been involved in the local community for over 30 years. He has been a part of the Police Athletic League youth programs coaching football, basketball, softball and baseball, as well as a board basketball official for 15 years, and a member of the local Lions Club.
“I love all the trails and appreciate the landowners who permit a trail to be on their property and the volunteers who put in thousands of hours clearing and grooming,” Higgins said. “Maine has the best snowmobiling in the northeast with breathtaking views and amenities all along the 14,000 miles. It is a great family sport, and during winter months it is a fantastic way to see Maine — a winter wonderland.”
