WINTHROP – The historic Winthrop Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) on Bowdoin Street is in the midst of its largest renovation project in more than 40 years, including restoring and protecting the church’s bell tower and steeple, a visible fixture in downtown Winthrop.
At present, the congregation has raised 70 percent of the funds needed to complete the building updates. The congregation is asking community member to consider donating as well, to make the project a reality and preserve the bell tower and historic building. Founded in 1776, the church has deep roots in downtown Winthrop, starting as a small parish that met in a local tavern — the Squire Bishop’s Inn. The church moved to its current location at Bowdoin and Main streets in 1905, growing over the years. Winthrop Congregational Church is an “open and affirming” church welcoming visitors and parishioners from all walks of life.
Even during the renovations, Sunday services are still being held. Community members and summer visitors are invited to attend. Now through Sunday, Sept. 3, services begin at 9:30 a.m.; following that, the time changes to 10 a.m. Winthrop Congregational Church invites individuals of every race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, marital standing, socio-economic status, age, physical and mental ability to join in the ministry of the church. All are welcome to participate in worship, fellowship, and leadership.
Community members are encouraged to support the project, which address leaks that could damage the Bowdoin Street building. The congregation also will replace the church roof, repair the sanctuary and renovate and update the main entrance way.
