NORWAY — “The Art of the Collector: Selected Works from the Collection of Richard Sousa,” will be on display Saturday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Matolcsy Art Center, 480 Main St. This exhibit is an eclectic mix of restored historic works and local contemporary art. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Sousa, who moved to the Norway area eight years ago, began collecting art as a young man, acquiring the first pieces of his collection soon after his marriage. The collection includes pieces by famed historic regional artists such as George “Shavey” Noyes and Waldo Peirce, as well as prominent local artists who are still active today, including Barbara Traficonte and Rochelle Draper.
“This exhibit will be our first to honor a local art collector. We hope to make it an annual tradition,” said Melanie Tornberg president of the Western Maine Art Group.
