SUMNER — The Sumner Scholarship Fund, now in it 18th year, is gearing up for a Sept. 16th fundraiser featuring a barbecue buffet, bottle drive and fundraising calendar page for October.
The barbecue buffet will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the West Sumner Universalist Church vestry, 1114 Main St. in West Sumner. The menu includes ribs, brisket, pulled pork, beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, rolls, beverages, and dessert.
Calendars to benefit the scholarship fund will be sold during September and at the BBQ. They can also be purchased at the town office or calling Lee Berry at 388-2181.
Volunteers will also pick up bagged returnable bottles on Saturday, Sept. 16 in Sumner. Bottles can be left by the mailbox or at the Town Office. Bottles may be dropped off all year long behind the Town Office. Last year more than 31,000 bottles were collected to support the scholarship fund.
The Sumner Scholarship Fund provided five awards in 2017. Since its launch in 2000, it has given out 101 scholarships to Sumner residents pursing educational opportunities, including truck-driving school, music studies, nursing school and college courses. Any Sumner resident can apply for the annual awards and there are no age restrictions. Applications are available at the Town Office or online at www.sumnermaine.us and must be submitted by April 30.
The Scholarship Fund Committee needs drivers for the annual bottle drive. Volunteers are also needed to sell calendars or contribute a dessert for the barbecue. Check or cash donations are always welcomed at Sumner Town Office. Checks are made out to the Sumner Scholarship Fund.
