WINTHROP — Summer Festival kicks off with the 30th annual Sidewalk Art Festival Saturday, Aug. 19. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Main Street. Sponsored by the Winthrop Lakes Region Chamber, the art festival will feature painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, fabric arts, fine crafts and live music. Local artist Faith Benedetti also will direct the creation of a community, stained-glass mosaic at 130 Main St. The project is open to all ages, and multiple activities coincide throughout the day.
Local churches will hold lawn sales and offer homemade treats. Winthrop Congregational Church, 10 Bowdoin St., will sell lobster rolls, salads, baked goods and Krispy Kreme donuts, along with having a silent auction, crafts, jewelry, and second time around items for sale. St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 219 Winthrop Center Road (Route 135), will hold its summer fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with private vendors, trash and treasures, a bake sale, books and a luncheon.
Several children’s events also will be offered during the weekend. Bailey Public Library, Bowdoin Street, will host Naturalist as Artist — a hands-on children’s art program. There also will be a summer reading party from 1 to 2 p.m. at the library. A “Walk, Talk and Chalk” event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Norcross Point — located at the head of Maranacook Lake off Bowdoin Street and Memorial Drive — will encourage children to create art as they listen to storybooks.
Recreational pickle ball, with equipment provided, and “Ga Ga” — a children’s game– will be ongoing from 4 to 8 p.m. next to the town tennis courts. These activities are sponsored by Winthrop Plays Outside organization.
The 6th annual Winthrop Rotary Barbecue & Gumbo Festival to End Hunger will follow the art festival from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. behind Winthrop Grade School, 23 Highland Ave. The event will feature live music and a bounce house. The cost is $15 per person, $50 per family; all proceeds go to end hunger in the Winthrop lakes region.
Saturday’s events will conclude with Concerts at Norcross Point on Maranacook Lake, 6 to 9 p.m., featuring ‘Metal Mash Up’ with The Beast of Nod and special guests The Rob Caldwell Band and Sons of Be’s.
Artist Kate Harris will lead the repainting of the “Winthrop Plays Outside” mural, behind Winthrop Grade School, Sunday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The activity is open to all ages and abilities.
The weekend summer festival will end Sunday with Concerts at Norcross Point, from 2 to 4 p.m., featuring Norwood Pearson on acoustic guitar.
