Non-golfers invited to participate in Chip Morrison tournament

LEWISTON — Even non-golfers can participate this year in the LA Metro Chamber of Commerce/Central Maine Community College Chip Morrison Scholarship Scramble golf tournament.

The tournament, to be played Wednesday, Aug. 23, is the single largest local fundraiser for college scholarships benefiting youth and adults in the Lewiston-Auburn region, the chamber said in a news release. “Improving access to all forms of post-secondary education is a top priority to achieve a vibrant and stable workforce and local economy,” the release said.

Those who don’t golf, but want to support the program can be a virtual golfer by donating online. Every $2 donation will be matched with $1 from an anonymous donor, who has pledged $5,000 in matching funds.
The goal of this year’s tournament is to raise $53,000, which would bring the 18-year total raised to $700,000. Half of what’s raised funds scholarships for students from regional high schools and half goes to students at Central Maine Community College. Last year’s proceeds provided scholarships to 18 graduating seniors from Auburn, Lewiston, Turner, Lisbon, Sabattus, Durham and Mechanic Falls, as well as two local adults pursuing degrees at USM LA College and Maine College of Health Professions. Additionally, 26 CMCC students received Scramble Scholarships totaling more than $25,000.
