BELGRADE — There will be an “Old Time Tent Meeting” 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Belgrade Central School ball field, 158 Depot Road.
The guest speaker will be Wendell Calder, an evangelist and camp speaker; music will be provided by Exit 244 Saturday and by Kindred Heart Sunday. The event is free.
The tent meeting originates from the old camp meetings where people gathered to hear preaching of the Gospel.
In the continental United States, tent meetings have ranged from small locally-based tents holding perhaps a hundred folks, to large organizations with a fleet of trucks and tents able to hold thousands. The first camp meeting took place in July 1800 at Gasper River Church in southwestern Kentucky.
A much larger gathering was held at Cane Ridge, Ky., in August 1801, where between 10,000 and 25,000 people attended. It was this event that marked the organized tent meeting as the major venue to share the Gospel in the United States.
The Belgrade tent meeting will accommodate seating for 500 to hear and ponder Calder’s charismatic preaching style and knowledge of the Bible. To find out more information, visit www.lakescf.org, or call 207-458-4784.
