POLAND — The Poland Spring Preservation Society will be hosting free concerts every Monday evening throughout the summer beginning at 6:30 p.m. outside at the gazebo at the Poland Spring Resort, 640 Maine St.
In case of rain, concerts will be moved inside All Soul’s Chapel. All concerts are free and open to the public.
The Jim Gallant Band will perform July 17. Mix a little Americana, blues, folk, bluegrass and rockabilly with some great original music and you get the music of the Jim Gallant Band. Individually they have shared the stage with the likes of Livingston Taylor, Doc Wilson, Taj Mahal, Chubby Checker, the New Grass Revival and much more. Their up-tempo style and incredible musicianship will be sure to keep the audience on their toes. Castlebay will perform July 24. Members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives. They create a musical tapestry by combining history, legend and experience from both New England and Celtic heritages into their personable performance style. Castlebay has toured the eastern United States, Ireland, England and Scotland, playing at festivals and art centers, all while maintaining their commitment to cultural education.
The Maine Highland Fiddlers will perform July 31. Their music is part of a traditional Celtic music revival thriving throughout the North Atlantic rim. Along with fiddles, the group of seven musicians includes guitar, bodhran and piano in their concerts. Their music recaptures the kitchen-party atmosphere central to the Celtic tradition.
Make your Monday destination the Sunset Concert series at Poland Spring, where there is no admission fee and ample parking for all. Suggested donation is $5. Also this summer, the Poland Spring Preservation Society will continue its “Wicked Wednesdays” program July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the All Souls Chapel. This program concerns “Poland Spring and the Great War, ” presented by Jason C. Libby, former executive director of the Poland Spring Preservation Society.
This presentation will focus on Maine’s contributions of men and women, supplies and equipment during World War I. Part of the presentation also will focus on Poland Spring’s unsung hero — American Red Cross nurse Jane Jeffrey. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, one of the nation’s highest honors. After the war, she married Alvan Bolster Ricker and lived the rest of her days at Poland Spring.
Water and cookies will be provided, and the suggested donation is $5.
All proceeds from the concerts and lectures will benefit the society, whose mission is to preserve the historic buildings, artifacts and memorabilia and to educate the public about Poland’s Spring’s unique place in history.
