Leeds Central School students raise $1,400 for the food pantry

LEEDS — Students at Leeds Central School raised more than $1,400 for the food pantry with a Penny War “competition.”
Each classroom competed for a chance to have an extra 30 minutes on the water slide at the June 16 field day, as well as learn about giving back to the community.

The winning classrooms were Michelle Kyllonen’s first grade class and Claudeen Bergeron’s third/fourth grade class. In all, the 200 students at the school raised more than $1,400, which is about half of the food pantry’s annual budget.
“They’re all winners in our eyes!” said a news release from the school parent-teacher organization.
Also, during field day, the entire school read “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, and adopted the fish stream project. Each painted rock in the project symbolizes the students’ vow to be true to themselves and to recognize that there is “only one you” in the world and to make it a better place.
