NORWAY — Community Roots will host a free day-long series of workshops and presentations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, at the Alan Day Community Garden, 26 Whitman St. The event will feature one-hour educational demonstrations and presentations that showcase traditional and modern skills and technologies that aid in agriculture and conservation of resources and assists us to develop a resilient and sustainable local community, according to a news release.
Kids’ activities are available while folks attend each demo or talk. The event is free, but donations are appreciated, the release said. Workshop topics include pruning, permaculture, solar power, kimchi fermenting foods, beekeeping, mulch gardening and more.
The youth leadership summer program and vendors will be on site offering food, products and business information. Rocky Crockett, executive director of the community garden said the mutual goal of both organizations “is to empower people by sharing this information.”
“This includes preserving traditional Maine skills, helping to foster new skills, and to educate all generations of people about organic agriculture, homesteading, and ways of creating a sustainable lifestyle.” Kids activities and organizational aspects of this event are provided with the help of high school students who were accepted into the ADCG Youth Leadership Program.
The event will celebrate the completion of this summer leadership program that fosters education, community service and skills to assist them in their lives and careers.
