RANGELEY — Astronomer Kevin Manning, founder of “Look Up to the Stars,” a national education company that promotes scientific literacy, will speak about the universe and our place in at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at the Rangeley Public Library.
In his 90-minute family-friendly presentation, “Astronomy for Everyone: Size & Scale of the Universe,” Manning will discuss the universe from the very small to the very large. It’s a virtual journey throughout the cosmos. Manning was a consultant with NASA on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, which was launched on the space shuttle, with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
“In a time when there is concern for our nation and welfare, the purpose of ‘Look Up to the Stars’ is to help everyone think big, dream big and to foster interest, curiosity and literacy in science through the delivery of awe-inspiring, educational and entertaining astronomy programs,” said a news release from the library.
After the presentation, participants will go outdoors to view celestial objects such as the ice crystal rings of Saturn or craters on the moon through a powerful hand-crafted telescope, weather permitting.

The time, 7 p.m., is an hour later than most of the library’s evening programs so that the sky will be dark enough after the program for good viewing.
