NORWAY — Chet Lunner, a former journalist and retired senior intelligence executive for the federal Department of Homeland Security, spoke at Norway Memorial Library on June 15 on how readers can understand whether the news they read is credible.
In his presentation, Lunner, a Cape Elizabeth resident, discussed how to differentiate reliable sources from unreliable. He started his talk by saying, “There is no such thing as fake news,” and explained that there are untruths and sloppy writing, which are caused by of unclear thinking.
He advises journalists to slow down and be careful to get the facts accurate before publishing. He suggested that the audience keep reading a variety of sources, stay current, subscribe responsibly and remain vigilant and active in exercising First Amendment rights.
Lunner was an editor at the Biddeford Journal-Tribune, the Portland Evening Express and the Kennebec Journal in Augusta in the 1970s and 80s before moving on to public service.
