SABATTUS – A great man, Wesley A. Stevens, 83, of Monmouth, passed away suddenly Thursday, June 1, after struggling with congestive heart failure and diabetes for many years.
Born Dec. 22, 1933, in Leeds, the son of Norman Stevens and Bertha (Waldron) Stevens, he attended school in Leeds and received his GED. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959. On June 18, 1960, he married Anita Bergeron in Monmouth.
Our community remembers Red Roof in Leeds, which Wes and Anita owned for 26 years. He enjoyed all of the customers and especially the children who came into the store. Prior to Red Roof, he worked for 25 years at Albany Felt Company, where he was involved with an interesting project for the space shuttle program making heat shield tiles. Despite his failing body, his mind remained sharp; he maintained his excellent humor, infectious laugh and always had a sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes.
Those who knew and loved him called him “Papa.” He loved hunting with all three of his boys. In 2014, he bagged an 861-pound moose with a 42-inch spread while with them in Rangeley. He was so proud. He loved fishing on Rick’s pontoon boat. He loved his Kubota and puttering in the garage. Papa enjoyed going to soccer, baseball and softball games for his great-grandchildren. He loved the annual Stevens Thanksgiving and our family Christmas every year, where everyone fills the house, and Papa was always sure to ask each person “Did you get enough to eat?” He is the most loved, and he loved the most.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Stevens of Monmouth; three sons, John Stevens and wife Debbie of North Monmouth, Rick Stevens and wife Tammy of Monmouth, and Stacy Stevens of Monmouth; three brothers, Norman “Stanley” Stevens of Jackman, David Stevens and wife Sandra of Monmouth, Charles Stevens and wife Marilyn of Phippsburg; three sisters, Margaret Strupcewski and husband Robert, Martha Frost and husband Kenneth, and Linda Stevens of Mineral Wells, Texas; grandchildren Trisha and husband Bill, Zach, Alyssa and husband Jason, Max, Jake, McKenzie and Cory, and great-grandchildren Emma and Ryan.
Wesley was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Byron Stevens and Alfred “Herman” Stevens, and a sister, Ferlene Conley.
