LEWISTON — Concert pianist and master teacher Tamara Poddubnaya will be joined by rising star Vasily Panteleev in the Piano Series recital Friday, June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center, 46 Cedar St. This sixth and final program in the 2016-2017 Piano Series season will feature both solo and two-piano pieces, including works by Mozart, Johann Strauss, Scriabin and Rachmaninov. The center’s two Steinway grand pianos will be showcased together.
Tamara Poddubnaya is a distinguished graduate of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg and has performed to great acclaim in Europe and the United States. Renowned for her dynamic teaching style and much sought after as a juror at international piano competitions, she keeps a busy schedule, teaching and performing in Europe and the United States, where she is professor and head of the Piano Department at the Long Island Conservatory, Albertson, N.Y. She co-founded the Portland Conservatory International Piano Festival in 2004, and in July 2007, she established the Music without Borders International Piano Festival at Gould Academy, Bethel, about to begin its 11th season in July.
Vasily Panteleev, 27, a student from Saratov, Russia, graduated with honors in piano performance from the Saratov Regional College of Arts in 2008. He continued his piano studies after enrolling at Saratov State University, where he followed a curriculum in international relations and English studies. He came to the United States in 2014 to study with Professor Poddubnaya, and that summer won first prize in the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, Glen Cove, Long Island. In 2016, he was the Grand Prix winner at the “Musical Fireworks” international competition, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Last July, he received the Grand Prix of the Music without Borders International Piano Competition, held at the close of that festival’s 10th season. Currently completing his diploma studies at Long Island Conservatory, this rising star already travels in two worlds — that of classical piano performance and as interpreter/translator (Russian, English and Chinese) for international commerce.
General admission is $15; seniors citizens, $10; students are free. The Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center is located at Cedar and Oxford streets in the “Little Canada” section of Lewiston, just across the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge from New Auburn; it is handicapped accessible. Parking is included in the price of the ticket.
