GOOD DEED: Wayne couple raising money to build home for family in Mexico

Jun. 22017

WAYNE — Steve and Molly Saunders are raising money for a family in desperate need of housing who they met while traveling in Mexico this past winter.

The money raised will help them build a basic structure that will enable the family to stay dry this coming rainy season, the Saunders said in a news release.

Molly Saunders said she hadn’t seen such dire poverty since her Peace Corps days in the 1960s. A simple block structure with bath can be built for four to eight thousand dollars, she said.

“This Mayan family of five would be thrilled to have this happen, as their present wood slat house has large holes in the roof, and replacing it is impossible without rebuilding the rest of the house,” she said. “The family has no indoor plumbing, and they cook on the ground inside the house. They sleep on hammocks, and have no running water or electricity.

“We have committed to help this wonderful family because we can and because we should, one family at a time,” the release said. “Ours is a very giving community with many people who step up when asked. We are also reaching out to our wonderful Peace Corps friends, Steve’s former Spanish students, advisees, baseball players, staff members, administrators and parents, all with good hearts and willing to help in some small way.”

The couple plans one of Steve’s “famous taco dinners” and a slide show in the future.

Anyone who wishes to donate may send it to Steve Saunders, PO Box 231, Wayne, ME 04284, or contribute directly through the GoFund Me website www.gofundme.com/stevesaunders, where there will be regular updates. taco photo
