AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Historical Society’s June presentation “The History of the Popham Colony and the Pinnace Virginia,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St.
Boatbuilder Rob Stevens and historian Allison Hepler discuss the history of the Popham colony, and present-day efforts to reconstruct the Virginia, a boat the colony built sand sailed back to England in.
The short-lived Popham Colony, established in 1607 in what is now Phippsburg, was the first English settlement in New England. The colony lasted a year, after which colonists sailed back for England in 1608 on the a “pretty pinnace,” the Virginia, which they built while at Popham.
Stevens is overseeing the reconstruction of Virginia. Hepler is a history professor at the University of Maine at Farmington and a local historian. Both are active members of Maine’s First Ship, the organization devoted to reconstructing the vessel.
The event is free to the public, though donations are accepted.
