PHILLIPS — The Wicked Good Band will appear at the Phillips Area Community Center on Saturday, June 3, with a repertoire of songs about everything from Maine foods to road kill to a game warden named Vernal B. Good.
The band will perform at 7 p.m. as part of the fifth annual Welcome to Summer weekend. Admission is $10.
The band, which has played together for more than 35 years, and performed in all of Maine’s 16 counties, as well as across the country, combines styles that include country-western, 50s rock, a cappella and even rap.
“Take a healthy measure of Mad Magazine, cross it with the Bangor Daily News, add a dash of the Smothers Brothers and two dashes of Bert & I, sprinkle liberally with Spike Jones, Salvador Dali and the Three Stooges, let stand for an hour or so on stage, and you get The Wicked Good Band,” said a news release. One reviewer described the mix of music and comedy as proving “the ridiculous can be sublime.”
Members play an array of normal instruments, including piano, guitar, harmonica, as well as sharing the stage with some not-so-normal instruments including the washboard, crescent wrenches, bird whistles, kazoos, human gargles and more.
Members are Steve Bither, piano; Jere DeWaters, guitar, harmonica, washboard; Bill Schulz, washtub bass and wrenches; and Robie Coffin, electric guitar. Sometimes the band also plays with special guests, jug, string, and horn players “who have nothing better to do.”
