LEWISTON-AUBURN — The Joint Charter Commission has been meeting to discuss the pros and cons of Auburn and Lewiston becoming one city, receiving nearly 1,000 suggestions for what a new city should be named, if voters approve a merger in November.
Most suggestions fall into three categories:
* Variants of Androscoggin — Androscoggin, Androscoggin City, Androscoggin Falls, Andros, Andro
* Great Falls
* Combing Current Names — Aubiston, Auston, Austin, Aulew, Lewburn, Lauburn, Lewaubston, Lewiston-Auburn, Auburn-Lewiston
A number of people suggested River City, and one very inventive person suggested, in a set of set of drawings, the cities become Future, Maine — the newest city in the USA. The commission welcomes additional suggestions at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8SGTDRZ and expects to review the name suggestions against a list of criteria it has set in place to govern the final decision. That decision is expected at the June 8 meeting at the Auburn Public Library.
To work through the naming process in a thoughtful way, the commission has been helped on a pro-bono basis by a team from _Association for Consulting Expertise, a non-profit association of independent consultants whose members represent a broad range of professional skills and services. In support of economic development in Maine, ACE is offering its services to municipalities to help advance their efforts in the area of economic development. The commission is grateful to have been the beneficiary of their expertise and support.
