LEWISTON — Healthy Androscoggin is offering individuals an opportunity to learn how to stretch their food dollars by choosing healthy, tasty foods that are lower in cost.
A “Cooking Matters at the Store” tour event will offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at Hannaford, 692 Sabattus St. The event is free and open to the public.
Participants can stop by any time during the two hours to take a self-guided tour of the departments in the store. Healthy Androscoggin’s nutrition educators will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on making healthy choices, adding more fruit, veggies and whole grains to everyday meals, reading nutrition facts on food labels and offering tips on smart shopping to make food budget dollars go farther.
Upon completion of the tour, each participant will receive a free recipe book and a reusable grocery bag, as well as a $10 Hannaford gift card to apply what they have learned and purchase healthy foods.
This and similar education programs are provided by funds from the Maine Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education with the goal of teaching people how to shop, cook and eat healthy on a budget. SNAP-ED is funded by the USDA and is administered in Maine by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and implemented statewide by the University of New England with contracts through local community coalitions.
Healthy Androscoggin, the community coalition for Androscoggin County, has four nutrition educators who are responsible for delivering SNAP-ED programs to individuals in Androscoggin County.
