LIVERMORE — The Washburn-Norlands Foundation is seeking applications for the Ethel “Billie” Gammon History Education Summer Fellowship Award. Maine High School seniors have the chance to receive a $1,000 fellowship, named in honor of the Norlands Living History Center (Norlands) founder, Billie Gammon.
As a Billie Gammon Fellow, the award winning senior will participate as a member of the Norlands summer staff, gaining valuable experience in living history education, museum operations, historic agriculture and other topics that may relate to his/her interests. This professional development opportunity is designed to honor Norlands founder’s endless enthusiasm for sharing American history using living history methods.
The fellowship is awarded to a senior who has been inspired by experiencing living history at the Norlands and is planning to pursue a field related to its mission, which includes history, but could also include education, American studies, museum studies and political science, for example.
Applicants for the fellowship must complete an application form and submit an essay of 750-1,000 words — no later than May 30 — describing how experiencing living history at the Norlands relates to and/or has impacted their interests and their life plans. The essay should include the applicant’s goals for being named a Billie Gammon Fellow. One letter of recommendation is also required. Final candidates will be invited to meet Norlands staff in early June, and the winner will be announced in mid-June.
To receive the full award, the fellow is expected to work for Norlands (290 Norlands Road) for 75 hours (approximately two days per week) late June through August, and under the mentorship of Norlands’ staff members, undertake such work, including but not limited to, giving tours of the Washburn family mansion, working in the gift shop, conducting research, assisting with special events, helping with farm work, responding to public inquiries and general administrative tasks.
The fellow will round out his/her experience by completing a capstone project summarizing their work by writing an article, making a public presentation, completing a research project, or other mutually-determined project of interest.
The fellowship is an advantageous training opportunity designed to give a high school senior the chance to tailor a project to his/her interests and broaden horizons while learning new skills before starting college in the fall.
