Mark Prevost is well-known both in the community of Rumford, where he grew up, and now in Lewiston-Auburn, where he has worked for the past 20 years as resident services director at Schooner Estates Senior Living Community. Whether he’s crooning the first few lines of a song as he walks past (though never the whole thing, as his memory for lyrics is extremely limited), or comically walking into a door frame, he brings a smile to all he works with.
His ability to maintain an upbeat attitude and friendly demeanor when faced with any challenge is an asset at work, but it’s likely another set of skills that have made him a successful high school hockey referee for the past 40 years.
Mark has lived in Maine all his life. He loved growing up in Rumford, a town with tremendous natural beauty and neighborly, small-town charm. He credits his upbringing among the community-minded people of Rumford and Mexico with his success working to help maintain community relations at Schooner Estates. In 1997, Mark met his wife Lisa at Schooner, where she was working as a cook. They have been happily married now for 13 years.
The senior citizens who interact with Mark every day can’t say enough about his helpfulness, humor and compassion, and he is fond of them, too. “What I love about working with our residents,” he explains, “is how honest and kind they are. The older generations were raised to have a lot of respect for other people. They have so many life experiences to call upon and share. I’ve worked here for 20 years, and I look forward to every single day.”
When Mark isn’t bringing Schooner residents to restaurants and museums all around Maine or out on the ice blowing his whistle, he can often be seen at Chamber of Commerce events in the Lewiston-Auburn area. If you see him out and about, say hello. Just don’t be too concerned if he walks into a door frame — he’s probably just faking it.
