MONMOUTH – “The Maine Home Front in World War I,” an illustrated lecture documenting the role played by Maine men and women during that time, especially at home, will be presented by Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth Jr., Wednesday, May 24, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Cumston Free Public Library, 796 Main St., Monmouth.
Previously unseen photographs, many of them real photo postcards of the period, tell the story of recruitment, troop departures, parades, bond drives, shipbuilding, war-related industries and knitting socks for soldiers. This chapter in Maine’s past comes alive in these century-old pictures.
A native of Portland, Shettleworth attended Deering High School, Colby College and Boston University. In 1971, he was appointed by Gov. Kenneth Curtis to serve on the first board of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, for which he became the architectural historian in 1973 and director in 1976.
