RUMFORD — Girl Scouts in the Telstar Unit recently dropped off 190 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to be distributed by the Greater Rumford Area Ministry Pantry Service for its home delivery meal program.
The girls in the troop, who are from Peru, Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Rumford and Mexico, took cookie shares orders in January for the Meals on Wheels program.
GRAMPS coordinator Stefanie Wilson said she was excited about receiving the first-time donation of cookies. Girls who sold at least 10 boxes of cookie shares received a special patch this year. Earning the patch were Daisy Scouts Payton McDaniel and Zoey Defeo of Troop 528 in Peru; Brownie Scouts Brooklyn Webster and McKenzie Boyle of Troop 498 in Peru; Brownie Scouts Elliot Richardson, Samantha Searles, Marley Berry and Molly Cormier of Troop 910 in Dixfield; Juniors Cecelia Gamache and Sayge Smith; and Cadettes Sonya Rocray and Lily True.
GRAMPS delivers about 45 meals on wheels and serves about 60 in-house meals, according to its Facebook page. Girl Scouting teaches girls about community service by doing for others. Donating Girl Scout cookies is one way the Scouts give back, leaders said. Troops also collect donations of cookie shares when selling cookies at their cookie booths.
This year, Brownie Troop 910 collected donations to send more than 80 boxes overseas to the military and Daisy Troop 528 and Cadette Troop 954 collected donations or more than 40 boxes combined for the Peru Food Pantry. The unit also thanked everyone who bought cookies to donate. “Cookie sales are done for this year, but we will be back selling again next January,” leaders said.
