Kennebec Land Trust field trips to focus on migratory, breeding birds

AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Land Trust and Augusta Birding Club have scheduled two annual Lyceum field trips for the coming months that focus on migratory and breeding birds. The programs accompany the groups’ March lecture series.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at Hutchinson Pond in Manchester, participants can view migratory and breeding birds on the trails through fields and woods, with views of a wetland pond and Hutchinson Pond. Potential bird sightings will include various warblers, alder flycatcher, wood duck, yellow-bellied sapsucker and blue-headed vireo. Organizers warn that the trails can be muddy and buggy and participants should plan accordingly.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Torsey Pond Nature Preserve in Readfield, participants can look for breeding birds in the preserve woods and for wetland birds at the preserve’s duck blind. Ninety-nine species of birds have been documented at this preserve. Potential birds include various warblers, Virginia rail, swamp sparrow, sandhill crane, hermit thrush and scarlet tanager.
