NORWAY — The Mollyockett Chorus of Sweet Adeline International is delighted to introduce Simon Smith as its new director. Smith brings not only his strong music background but also fun and energy to chorus rehearsals held every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at First Universalist Church of Norway, 479 Main St.
Smith graduated from the University of Southern Maine, a music education major who also studied euphonium with Dan Hunter and Briah Diehl and choral conducting with Robert Russell. He is currently what might be called an itinerant music educator working many different jobs over the course of his week, some of them including Holy Savior Catholic School (formerly St. John’s Catholic School) in Rumford, Forestdale School in South Woodstock, Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, and a private-lesson studio in and around Bethel and Portland for brass instruments (and at the moment one guitar and one violin).
He is an as-yet unpublished but current performing composer of music for choirs and brass instruments and also writes and records music for voice, guitar and mandolin, either solo or with collaborators Aileen Andrews and Abbie Goldberg.
“I am very excited for this opportunity to work with the Mollyockett Chorus, and I look forward to performing with them in the near future,” Smith remarked when his directorship was confirmed by chorus membership. Smith will be directing the chorus at the Sweet Adeline Region 1 spring competition May 6 at Symphony Hall, 34 Court St., Springfield, Mass.
The Mollyockett Chorus has completed its 20th year as a chapter of Sweet Adelines International and has members from Oxford, Androscoggin and Cumberland counties. Women interested in learning more about the chorus may visit the rehearsals.
