Auburn Public Library carves out teen time

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library is hosting a series of events focused on entertaining teens from 12 to 18 years of age, unless otherwise noted. The events are held on a variety of days throughout the month of May.

Tweens in the Teen Space, Wednesdays, May 3, 10, 17 and 24, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Teen Space — Sixth graders are invited to meet up in the Teen Space on the second floor on half-day Wednesdays. There will be crafts or board games available (just ask us), you can stop by to get a head start on your homework, or just hang out with friends!

Teen Anime Club, Wednesday, May 3, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room — Get animated over anime! Teens can drop in to talk about their favorite (or least favorite) manga, watch this week’s selection of anime, and try their hand at drawing their own characters. This program was made possible by a generous gift of the P&G Fund of Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Snacks will be provided.

Homework Help, Thursdays, May 4, 11, and 18 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Study Room 22 3 –Teens! Homework Help is here! Stop by Thursdays for help in any subject giving you difficulty!

Gaming Hour, Wednesdays, May 10 and 31, 4 to 5 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room — Take a break from studying and stop by the Androscoggin Room on the lower level for video games and snacks. There is an XBox and Wii and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. This program was made possible by donations from the P&G Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and the law firm of Norman, Hanson & DeTroy.

Teens – Safe Voices, Thursday, May 11, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Teen Space — Come hang out with Whitney from Safe Voices. Each month, she will visit the Teen Space to chat about relationships and work on craft projects.

Also in May, the teen discussion group “Great Stories Club: Structures of Suffering” will meet twice. Topics focus on “Structures of Suffering: Origins of Teen Violence and Suicide,” Friday, May 12, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Teen Space. Discussion will include pages 1-181 of “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.” Heather Carter, director of prevention and youth programs from NAMI Maine, will join the group to talk about depression, warning signs and what we can do.

The group will meet again Friday, May 26, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Teen Space to discuss the second half of “It’s Kind of a Funny Story.” They will start watching the movie and research local agencies able to help someone who is depressed or suicidal. The group also will create a poster to put up in the Teen Space as well as complete the survey for this book and receive copies of the third book in the series, “Romeo & Juliet (No Fear Shakespeare).” Teens must be available for the discussion scheduled for June 9 to receive a copy of this book and, if interested, must contact Donna at 333-6640, ext. 4.

TEENS! SNACK CHAT MONDAY, MAY 15 3:00-4:00 PM IN THE TEEN SPACE Drop by to enjoy a healthy after school snack and engage in some enlightening conversation about current events. This program is provided by support from Jim Pittman of Jim’s Auto Sales.

TEENS! DIY TAKEOVER: CRAFT WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY, MAY 17 4:00-5:00 PM IN THE TEEN SPACE Teens! Come by on the 3rd Wednesday of each month for a do-it-yourself craft! Some of the things teens have done include duct tape crafts, mug cakes, and sugar scrub, just to name a few! This month, there will be a number of crafts which we’ve done before! Try your hand at quilling (using our kit, which you can check out afterwards), make something out of duct tape, or braid a homemade bracelet! Working on a craft at home? Bring it along to share! Have ideas for a future DIY? Let us know!

DIY TEENS! MEDIA CLUB WEDNESDAY, MAY 24 4:00-5:00 PM IN THE CREATE! MEDIA LAB Movies! Music! Graphic arts! If you can imagine it, you can create it in our Media Lab. Come join our Media Club, work on your own project or together with other teens to make trailers, podcasts, and more!

TEENS! SAPARS VISIT THURSDAY, MAY 25 3:00-4:00 PM IN THE TEEN SPACE Hannah from the Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Services will drop by the Teen Space for crafts, games and good conversations!

TEENS AT THE APL FRIDAY, MAY 26 3:00-4:00 PM IN THE TEEN SPACE Teens! Each year, the Teen Librarian sits down with the teens in an effort to come up with activities and programs that they want to do. Join us in the Teen Space to talk about the Auburn Public Library — whether it’s about the Teen Space itself, the YA books in our collection, or the programs and activities offered.
