RUMFORD — Did you know there are eight suicides for every homicide in Maine?
The National Alliance on Mental Illness states suicide is a tragic death that is often preventable, and prevention is up to everyone. NAMI Western Mountains and its NAMI Mexico support group are sponsoring a NAMI Suicide Prevention Awareness community education program Tuesday, May 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria at Mountain Valley High School. The workshop is free and open to anyone wanting to learn more about mental wellness and suicide prevention.
Participants will gain knowledge and skills of suicide prevention, learn how to support community members and loved ones, and become familiar with resources for professional support. Pre-registration is not required. Greg Marley, a licensed clinical social worker and NAMI Maine’s clinical director, will lead the workshop. Marley has practiced in the field of community mental health and suicide prevention for more than 25 years.
NAMI Maine is the state’s largest grassroots, membership-based mental health organization. Programs are offered statewide to enhance the lives of any one impacted by mental illness through support, education and advocacy, according to the organization’s web site.
