AUGUSTA — Nine students will represent the Augusta area in June at the annual Boys and Girls State events, sponsored by the Armory Street branch of Camden National Bank, Cony High School, American Legion Post 2, and two Kennebec County auxiliary units.
Boys and Girls State, a four day-overnight, immersed program, takes place at Thomas College and Husson University in June and is sponsored by the American Legion and its women’s auxiliary. High School juniors attending the event “learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens while having fun in competitive, intramural fun,” according to a news release from the state American Legion.
The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. In most cases, individual expenses are paid by a sponsoring local American Legion post, a local business, another community-based organization, parents or individual donors.
