SOUTH PARIS — Gardeners Growing Healthy Communities will host a potluck dinner and presentation by Jock Robie, founder of Mainely Worm Bins, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at First Congregational Church, 17 E. Main St.
Worm composting, or vermiculture, makes the world a better place by keeping food scraps out of the solid-waste system and producing a fertilizer for all plants, inside and out. Robie has eight years of practical experience with worm bins (now a worm farm) and likes to share this experience with those interested in composting with worms. He will address the importance of building a worm bin and what to consider before doing so.
The event also will include:
* How to set up a worm bin
* How and what to feed the worms
* How to maintain a worm bin in order to control moisture, odor and insect pests
* How to harvest worms and worm castings
* How to use worm castings
* How to make and use aerated worm tea from the castings
After the presentation, there will be a drawing for a door prize — a worm bin with worms to take home that evening.
