RUMFORD – In the heart of Western Maine, nestled at the end of Congress Street in Rumford’s downtown is a clean, safe and affordable living option that could be just what you’re looking for. Rumford Island Housing located at 20 Congress Street is now taking applications for 1- or 2-bedroom apartments. In a recent interview with Turner Publishing, Property Manager Delanna Garey proudly speaks of her facility, which is run by Stanford Management. “We are thrilled with the turnaround of this property and we are happy about what we offer for the general good of the town and for the benefit of the tenants we serve. We are always accepting applications and we currently have some vacancies that are ready for move-in now and through the next 60 days,” says Garey. “This is a great time to apply as we do not have a long wait list.”
To qualify for residency, applicants must meet certain requirements: that they be 62 years or older OR handicapped OR disabled, AND meet annual income levels of less than $31,000 (for one person households) or less than $35,400 (for two person households). Rental rates are based on income thus making them quite affordable. For the protection and safety of all residents, a credit and criminal background check as well as a good rental history is required.
WHAT ARE TENANTS SAYING ABOUT RUMFORD ISLAND HOUSING?
Gert Martin, who has lived there almost 20 years says, “I like the socializing. It’s just a nice place to live.” Linda Eunson who has lived there with her dog for the past two years remarked, “It’s a safe building. I like it. I feel safe living here.” Faye Spittle who has been there for almost a year says, “I love it here. I feel comfortable and safe here, with the security cameras and everything. I like the people here, too. They treat me with respect.”
Phyllis Adams who moved to Rumford Island Housing last June following a fire at her former residence says, “I love it here. I won’t go back, no matter when they (her former location) reopen. I’m going to stay right here. I’ve got nice wood floors. They’re so easy to clean. It’s bigger than my (old) apartment and the kitchen is twice the size, and I like to cook.”
Rather than just providing housing, the staff and management strive to create a homey environment for the tenants. Rumford Island Housing’s focus is not to just be a landlord, but a kind of second family, offering support to their residents when needed. Service Coordinator Stacy Thompson, who used to work with Hope Association, came out of retirement to work at Rumford Island Housing. She advocates for the tenants, helping to keep services in place in order for tenants to remain independent.
Rounding out the team at Rumford Island are Errin Smith, maintenance tech, who came to the property in 2013 and Dodie Heath, cleaning specialist, who joined the team last year. Together they ensure that the property stays in perfect operating condition. They take personal pride in their work and the residents clearly notice.
The well-maintained building, which opened in the early 1980’s, has 88 units on six floors. Garey said the 20 Congress Street building offers many amenities that other multi-unit buildings do not. There is an on-site indoor laundry facility, on-site indoor mail delivery, and elevator access and a trash chute on every floor. The building boasts a large community room with kitchen facilities and dining tables and chairs for functions and social gatherings as well as a beautiful, sunlit top-floor solarium with awesome views of the Androscoggin River falls and the park below. The individual units have spacious rooms, kitchens with plenty of cupboards and drawers, and ample closet space. Small pets are allowed.
