LEEDS – The Rural Community Action Ministry’s gardening services program is gearing up for the season with plans to assist needy families in 14 communities, and is hoping outreach to towns and schools will increase participation. The program encourages and assists individuals and families who are experiencing financial hardship by helping them to grow and preserve their own food, according to a news release from the RCAM.
The program provides seeds, seedlings, tilling, information and site visits to support successful food production. The program is for residents of Buckfield, Canton, Greene, Hartford, Leeds, Litchfield, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Monmouth, Sabattus, Sumner, Turner, Wales and Wayne. Signup and informational flyers will be delivered to each town hall, food pantry and through the Backpack Program in schools during March and April with the aim of increasing families taking advantage of the program, the release said.
Seeds have been ordered and delivered to RCAM and sorted into individual packages getting ready for distribution to gardeners. Seedlings are again being grown for distribution with the seeds in May and June, according to the release. Fore more information, Ellen Eldridge, hunger prevention coordinator, at 524-5095.
