AUGUSTA — A Windsor girl came in first in the state, and students from St. Michael School and Winthrop Middle School were runners-up in the annual Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest.
Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 from St. Michael in Augusta, Winthrop Middle School, and Windsor Elementary School competed in the regional Koussinoc Chapter contest. Students wrote an essay entitled “Celebrating a Century: America’s National Parks,” researching information about a national park, pretending they visited it and writing a journal about the park and what makes it a national treasure.
A panel of three judges chose winning essays based on historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness, according to a news release from the Kousinnoc Chapter. First place winning essays were submitted to the state DAR for judging at that level.
In the photo, from left: Sydni Plummer of Windsor was chosen First Place Grade 8 for the state. Ava Nadeau, a sixth-grader at St. Michael and Vealy Lai, a seventh-grader from Winthrop, were state runners-up for their grade levels.
Koussinoc Chapter DAR presented awards at the Togus VA Auditorium on March 13. The regional winners were:
Grade 6: First Place, Nadeau; Second Place, Amelie Grube, Winthrop,
Grade 7: First Place, Lai; Second Place, Jenna Gallant, St. Michael.
Grade 8: First Place, Plummer; Second Place, Jack Rodrigue, St. Michael.
