NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine has announced a variety of activities for the month of April.
The center, located in the Stephens Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic building, 199 Main St, offers a variety of free programs to anyone affected by cancer, and visitors are welcome to stop by for information or to join an activity, according to a news release from the center.
Drop-in hours are 9 a.m.–3 p.m. every Thursday and Friday, when volunteers are available to provide comfort items such as port protectors, wigs, hats, pillows or find resources. Brochures are available for pickup, and the center also has a lending library. “The Center is also a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, chat with a volunteer or take time for yourself by participating in activities offered,” the release said.
April activities include:
Free Reiki Session Clinic, 9 a.m.–noon, Saturday, April 22, at the Norway Town Office, 19 Danforth St. Anyone affected by cancer may receive a free Reiki session at this clinic by calling 890-7063 before April 14 to reserve a time slot. Any open slots after that date will be open to the general public.
Women’s Cancer Support Group will meet from noon–1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 4. Participants should bring a bag lunch or snack. Call Patti-Ann at 744-6173 for more information
Men’s Cancer Support Group will meet from 4–5 p.m., Tuesday, April 11. Vance Jordan will lead the encouragement and support group, and men who have recently been recently diagnosed with cancer, are in treatment or are survivors are invited to attend, as well as men who are or have been caregivers. Banding Together To Restore takes place 11 a.m. to noon, Mondays, April 3, 10, 17 and 24 at Richard Bader Physical Therapy, 176 Main St. The program, lead by Lori Britting, focuses on regaining motion and strength through guided instruction using stretching and Therabands. Participants are encouraged to work within their abilities that will safely gain their desired goals. Getting back energy and the ability to move more easily and carry out daily tasks and enjoying life are part of this program. Preregistration is encouraged. Yoga Warriors classes are 3–3:45 p.m., Wednesdays, April 5, 12, 19 and 26 at Posabilities, 15 Tannery St. The free gentle yoga class supports healthy living for individuals facing the challenges of cancer through gentle movement and breath, supportive restorative yoga postures and guided mediation and relaxation. Preregistration is encouraged. Call 890-7063 or register day of class by arriving 15 minutes early.
Yoga for Wellness classes are 8–9 a.m., Fridays. Either Kat Larsen or Sherri will teach the class at the center, which will include breathing, movement and relaxing meditation while seated or standing. Check the website for more information.
Chair yoga classes are 2–3 p.m. Fridays.Sherri leads the class. No mats are necessary, chairs are provided.
Walk and Talkwith David. For those looking for someone to walk around Norway or South Paris with. David will share his favorite walking routes. Call him at 739-7027 to schedule a time.
Guided Meditation Gathering is 1–1:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 12. Guided meditation promotes relaxation which will lower stress. Using your imagination, along with your five senses, you may find yourself in a tranquil state that is rejuvenating. Susan Kane will lead the meditation.
Reiki 1 – Self Care is 1–2 p.m., Tuesday, April 25. Learn to practice Reiki for yourself. Reiki 1 – Self Care will offer you relief from some of the stress and discomfort you may be experiencing. Reiki complements the medical treatments prescribed by your physician. Charlotte LaBelle will be the instructor. 10 Tips for Health, noon–1 p.m., Monday, April 10. Kate Goldberg, community nutrition educator from Healthy Oxford Hills, will lead discussion in ways to increase fruit and vegetables in your diet, and it will include shared recipes and taste-testing. A light lunch will follow.
Stampin’ Up is 2–3:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 4.. Kathy provides materials and instruction to make a variety of cards.
Community Cancer Cut and Sew classes are 10 a.m.–noon, Wednesdays, April 12 and 26, and 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Participants cut out material for bonnets and other comfort items needed by the Center. Sewing kits are assembled for people to take home to sew or sew on site.
Fabric Crafting with Barbara, 1–3 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, at Sew Orchid Design, 316 Main St. Barbara Daigle teaches a series of non-sewing or beginner sewing crafts for participants to complete.
Beading Project, Monday, April 24 at Lively Accents, 310 Main St. Cathy always has a fun project, stop in and see what we are making.
Knitting and Crocheting, 10–11:30 a.m., Thursdays. Learn to knit or crochet, bring in your project or help us make hats for our clients.
Coloring for Adults, 1–2 p.m., Thursdays. Coloring books and a variety of markers are available.
Cards and Games, 1–2 p.m. Fridays. Various games are available at the center to play or participants may bring one of their own to get a game started.
