Talk at Rangeley library to discuss potential dangers of metal mining March 7

RANGELEY – Nick Bennett, staff scientist at the Natural Resources Council of Maine, will talk about the potential dangers of efforts to weaken Maine’s metallic mining rules and how you can help at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Rangeley Public Library.

Todd Martin, outreach coordinator for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, said that “For the third time in the last four years, the LePage administration is pushing to weaken Maine’s metal mining laws.”

According to Martin, “Metal mining is a dangerous and dirty operation. When mining pollution gets into rivers, lakes and streams, it devastates water quality, wildlife and fish populations. If weak metal mining rules are approved by the Legislature, it could lead to open-pit metal mines across the state. We need strong laws that will protect Maine from mining pollution.”

The presentation is free and open to the public. In case of a weather cancellation, the event will be held at the same time on the following, Tuesday, March 14.
