George E. “Ed” Lepage
1938 – 2017
AUBURN — George E. “Ed” Lepage, 78, of Turner and formerly of Duxbury, Mass., passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 10, at Hospice House of Androscoggin. He was the husband of 56 years to Anne R. (Haley) Lepage.
Ed started his life on Feb. 13, 1938, in Lewiston, the only child of the late George A. Lepage and the late Ethel (Langelier) Lepage.
Graduating from Lewiston High School Class of 1956, where he was active in hockey, football and any other sport he could play, Ed went on to the University of Maine. There Ed joined the ROTC and the Theta Chi fraternity. Following graduation in 1960 with a B.A. degree, Ed served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in an artillery unit during the Vietnam Era, eventually attaining the rank of captain before his release.
Ed then joined Liberty Mutual Insurance, where he steadily achieved promotions from senior underwriter, business lines manager, assistant vice president and manager and then taking on his last position as president of Helmsman Insurance, a subsidiary of Liberty Mutual.
Ed and his family lived in areas throughout the country from Philadelphia and Chicago to Pittsburgh and then Boston. Retiring in 2000, Ed and his wife returned to Maine, settling in Turner.
Ever caring about his country and a true patriot, Ed became an active member of the Phillip S. Bryant American Legion Post 111 of Turner, becoming the adjutant. Through his work with the post, scholarship funds were created for boys and girls state, initiated high school scholarships for college, as well as advocating for a medal of honor to be awarded to Henry B. Poisson of Turner.
Ed was also an avid golfer through most of his life, being a longtime member of the Marshfield Country Club and then the Turner Highlands Association. An ardent sports fan, Ed would visit his beloved Red Sox for spring training most every year, but the Patriots also held a special place in his heart. He lived to see the greatest Super Bowl triumph in history, watching with his son Michael right through to victory.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Anne R. (Haley) Lepage; his three children, Linda A. Rossi and her husband, Robert V. Rossi, of North Smithfield, R.I., Laurie M. Morris and her husband, Donald W. Morris, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Michael E. Lepage and his companion, Anne Marie Gazerro, of Norwood, Mass.; grandchildren, Nicholas F. Rossi of Arlington, Mass., Joseph E. Rossi of Detroit, Mich., and Matthew E. Morrissey, Michael C. Morrissey and Meghan A. Morrissey, all of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.
A special place was ever made in Ed’s heart for his grandchild, the late Andrew D. Morrissey of Memphis, Tenn.
