SeniorsPlus offers Tai Chi

LEWISTON — Are you looking for an accessible low-impact exercise program? Are you interested in managing pain or improving your balance? If so, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention is a program for you.

Tai chi provides a low-impact exercise that improves muscular strength, flexibility and fitness. Increasing your muscular strength supports and protects your joints, which will in turn reduce pain. Exercises that work on flexibility also help to reduce pain and stiffness, thus improving mobility. Tai chi improves your balance and significantly reduces the rate of falls in older adults.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention can help you improve your quality of life and remain independent, and is proven to alleviate pain, through simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

SeniorsPlus is offering an eight-week long Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention workshop from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays, Jan. 10 through March 3, in the Education Center, 8 Falcon Road. The program cost is $40.

Please call SeniorsPlus 1-800-427-1241 to register or for more information.

Searching for a way to make a difference?

LEWISTON-AUBURN — Those of us at Catholic Charities SEARCH (Seek Elderly Alone, Renew, Courage & Hope) believe that our seniors should receive support and care with dignity and respect, especially when they are isolated and lonely.

Since Maine has one of the nation’s largest senior populations, we have a huge challenge in front of us. In fact, without the love and support from family, friends and caring people like you we couldn’t provide the support needed for our elderly. With your assistance in volunteering, we can all make a difference in the life of a senior.

You can make a difference by investing a few hours a week to an isolated senior through a friendly visit, a ride to the grocery store or a phone call.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer in your community, we have seniors waiting for volunteer support in Auburn, Lewiston, Lisbon, Minot, Poland, Sabattus and Turner.

For more information please contact our Catholic Charities SEARCH Androscoggin program. Call Wendy Russell at 207-784-0157 or email wrussell@ccmaine.org.
