LEWISTON — The Lewiston Fire Department will be conducting ice water rescue training for firefighting personnel on Jan. 17, 19 and 24 at No Name Pond. On Jan. 16, in preparation for the training, firefighters will cut a hole in the ice alongside the private beach.
Barricades will be placed around the hole to mark its location, and residents should use caution in that area.
The training meets nationally recognized standards for ice water rescue and is designed to provide firefighters and emergency medical personnel with a hands-on training environment designed to demonstrate and practice the skills necessary to safely rescue a person who has fallen through weak ice.
A grant funded through an anonymous donor enabled the Lewiston Fire Department to purchase the necessary rescue equipment and suits. The equipment will be placed into service at Central Station, located at 2 College St. and at the 834 Main St. and 976 Sabattus St. substations.
