BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust invites all in the area to a presentation entitled “Mahoosuc Old Growth: the Once and Future Forest” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at McLaughlin Auditorium, the Gould Academy campus, on Church Street.
Ken Hotopp will describe the dramatic changes that our region’s forests and wildlife passed through following European settlement — unregulated hunting, fishing and logging; land clearing for agriculture peaking in approximately 1850; industrial boom and bust; and ongoing development.
He will describe what the original forests looked like, and how they functioned. He will also discuss the potential for forest recovery and restoration as we seek a sustainable economy and address climate change.
This event kicks off the Land Trust’s 2017 speaker series, “Iconic Places,” where we’ll lift up natural areas in and around our area that have particular significance. Some of the iconic places featured in future speaking or outdoor events will include Buck’s Ledge and Maggie’s Nature Park, wetlands around the Ellis River, flowering plants in the White Mountains, a paleoquarry, adventure along the Appalachian Trail and the Allagash and history of the Grafton Notch area.
