Expert to explain ‘why is that mountain there?’ Jan. 19

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — You happily speed down a snow-covered mountain not knowing that plate tectonics are responsive for it being there in the first place. Learn just why it popped up from Ed Laine at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in the Begin Family Community Room at the library.

Laine is recently retired from teaching at Bowdoin College where he was chair of the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences and earlier director of environmental studies. He is an oceanographer/marine geologist and has conducted research in the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern oceans. He presently helps college faculty improve their teaching through service learning (community-based learning). Come prepared to develop some learning goals about the earth and how it got built.
