NORWAY — The National Diabetes Prevention Program at Stephens Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce a new NDPP series. The NDPP is a Center for Disease Control program which has been proven as a successful strategy to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. The program meets for one year: weekly for the first 16 weeks, then once or twice a month for the remainder of the year.
Research shows the program works! NDPP is based on research that showed that people with prediabetes who participated in a structured lifestyle change program and lost 5 to 7 percent of their body weight (10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person) and included 150 minutes of physical activity weekly reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent (71 percent for people over 60 years old). Ask your provider about your risk!
The program focuses on developing healthy habits: food choices, physical activity, managing stress, staying motivated and problem solving. Sessions are interactive.
“Small changes can add up to big differences” said Betty Sirois, MSN, RN, CDE diabetes nurse educator at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
Working with a trained lifestyle coach who provides guidance, participants are making lasting changes together. The upcoming NDPP at Stephens Memorial Hospital will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 24.
There is a onetime $20 fee for the program.
