AUBURN — Parishioners at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Auburn joined together to warm hearts and offer support to parish and community families as they prepare for Christmas.
Parishioners provided donated goods to more than 20 Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish families and also collected 55 boxes of food, diapers and toiletries to assist St. Mary’s Food Pantry in its service to local residents.
“I am humbled by the vast amount of donations and contributions made in support of our Advent and Christmas parish outreach efforts this year,” said Deacon Denis Mailhot, outreach coordinator for Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
The St. Mary’s Food Pantry is one of the largest emergency food pantries in Maine, offering an immediate response to hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition within the most vulnerable populations of Lewiston and Auburn. The food pantry provides unprepared food to an average of nearly 400 people per week. The guests range from young people to senior citizens and include individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.
The food pantry is part of St. Mary’s Nutrition Center which encourages healthy eating through awareness campaigns and cooking demonstrations so that clients can learn simple, creative ways to prepare healthy meals with the food they receive.
“My ongoing involvement with the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center is awe inspiring because no one in need is turned away at the food pantry,” said Mailhot. “Thank you and merci to everyone in the Auburn parish and throughout our communities who help nurture, educate and feed hungry families throughout Lewiston and Auburn.”
