AUBURN — Melissa Potter of Lewiston was honored as student of the year and Kassie Schmidt of Auburn was the student speaker at the annual College for ME-Androscoggin annual awards luncheon held Dec. 2.
Melissa began her studies at CMCC last fall in the culinary arts program, in which she earned a certificate — with high honors — in May of this year. She is now enrolled in the restaurant management associate degree program, which she hopes to complete next year.
A member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Melissa currently holds down two part-time jobs and attends CM full time. Her newest job is working in Central Station, the new coffee kiosk in Jalbert Hall at CMCC. Despite this heavy workload, Melissa always makes times for the many activities and school meetings for her three children.
In recognition of her devotion to her family and success in her studies, Melissa was presented with the “Yes I Can” Single Parent Award at the CMCC annual dinner last April. Kassie began her studies this fall in the business administration and management program. At the luncheon, she spoke about her voyage starting when she dropped out of high school, to her great experience with the college transition program at Lewiston Adult Ed, and finally to starting her college studies at CMCC. Kassie hopes someday to be a small-business owner.
“I want to be an inspiration to my daughter,” Kassie said. “I’ve had an amazing experience in college.” Founded in 2005, College for ME Androscoggin unites more than 40 organizations and businesses that together are helping thousands of Central Maine residents achieve their higher education aspirations.
