AUGUSTA — Lithgow Public Library and the Unitarian Universalist Community Church are partnering to bring Ron Chase, author of “The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery,” to the library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6. This program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Community Room at the library, 45 Winthrop St.
“The Great Mars Hill Bank Robbery” profiles the real life adventure story of a Vietnam war hero who robbed the Northern National Bank in Mars Hill more than four decades ago. Patterson escaped with $110,000, which at the time was the largest bank robbery to ever occur in the state of Maine.
Patterson was running from the law for seven months. His travels took him to the West Coast and even to Europe before he was eventually caught.
Ron Chase is a former registered Maine guide and IRS accountant and was active in the AMC as canoe chair and a trip leader. Now a freelance writer, he is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines. He and his wife, Nancy, of Topsham, co-wrote “Mountains for Mortals: New England: Scenic Summits for Hikers.”
