Free performance and museum admission June 24
AUGUSTA — The Maine State Museum will host the popular musical group “Roll & Go” for two, free performances Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., as part of the museum’s Family Fun Days. The performances also mark the museum’s participation in the Kennebec Valley Chamber’s “Whatever Family Festival.” The museum will be open free of charge all day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Roll & Go” is a group of Maine men and women who love to sing sea shanties and other songs of the sea. Over the past 20 years, their spirited performances have earned them a growing reputation among festival and concert goers throughout Maine and New England. “Roll & Go” has been featured at the Mystic Sea Music Festival, Great Schooner Race in Penobscot Bay, Maine Festival and Portsmouth Maritime Festival, as well as many tall-ship special events and community concerts. The shanties are generally sung unaccompanied, combining strong solo work with tight harmonies on the refrain and chorus. The ballads feature instrumental back-ups on banjo, guitar, concertina, washtub bass and penny whistle.
“Roll & Go” will return to the Maine State Museum by popular demand, following a well-received performance a few years ago. “With Roll & Go, you’ll hear old songs brought back to life and some newer songs that highlight current conditions in our merchant marine and fishing industry,” commented Maine State Museum chief educator Joanna Torow. “Whether you are young or old, you are bound to have a lot of fun!”
The Maine State Museum’s Family Fun Days are sponsored by Reny’s Charitable Foundation and Oakhurst Dairy. The museum is located in the Cultural Building, adjacent to the Maine State House, 230 State St.
