GARDINER — Six area high school students shared in $3,000 worth of scholarships recently awarded by the Scholarship Committee of Gardiner Federal Credit Union.

The scholarships, in the amount of $500 each, were made to students who are pursuing post-secondary education or graduate degrees, according to a news release from the credit union.

Winners were Erin Qiu, Gardiner Area High School; Rosie Lynn Gaither, Gardiner Area High School; Benjamin Wolf, Maine Academy of Natural Sciences in Fairfield; Paige E. Costa, Maranacook Community High School in Readfield; Hannah Burns, Erskine Academy in South China; and Kaitlyn Sutter, Erskine graduate attending the University of Vermont.

To be considered for the scholarships, applicants had to complete the application process and submit two qualifying essays. Applicants must live work, worship or attend school in Kennebec County, Lincoln County, or in the towns of Palermo or Richmond.

The committee received 81 applications, for the six available scholarships. “There were dozens of remarkable essays among them,” said the release. “The committee truly enjoyed reading all of the essays that were submitted. Each essay made us feel as though we were personally getting to know many wonderful young people, in our communities, who we may otherwise never have met.
