WATERVILLE — Did you know one of the world’s most unique film festivals happens right here in Maine every July? It’s true! This year the Maine International Film Festival or MIFF, based in Waterville, will be holding a celebration of its 20th year from July 14 through 23 – offering 10 days of some of the most entertaining movies ever made, more than 100 of them in fact! From the 75th anniversary of Bambi to new movies being filmed right here in Maine, MIFF offers a film or two for any taste – whether you’re into romance, mystery, adventure or comedy.
20 years of fantastic film in Maine
For MIFF’s 20th year, organizers have invited some of their favorite guests from its first two decades to come back to Waterville and share a film with Festival attendees, be it one they were directly involved in or one that they simply loved and wanted to present to MIFF’s audiences. This means you never know what you might see at MIFF – last year, one of the special guests brought Flashdance and it nearly brought down the house!
Opening Night Party and Film
The opening night of MIFF on Thursday, July 14, will feature “The Sounding,” a new movie shot on Monhegan Island off midcoast Maine, as Castonguay Square in downtown Waterville comes alive with music, dancing, fantastic food, libations, whimsical video projections and lots of excitement.
MIFF celebrates 75th anniversary of Bambi
Yes, THAT Bambi! The Disney classic that made the woodlands feel like home to generations of young children has a significant Maine connection, so MIFF is excited to bring Bambi to the big screen once again. Back when Bambi was being made, Maurice Day, a Damariscotta-based photographer and artist, was sent to extensively photograph the Mt. Katahdin and North Woods area for the film’s visual development. During MIFF this year, the Festival will screen a new digital restoration of the classic animated film. Don’t miss seeing Bambi with your family in the beautiful surroundings of the Waterville Opera House.

Showcasing the best new releases of American and international independent cinema, this year’s Festival will mark the most world festival premiere screenings in MIFF’s history, with works by filmmakers from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, (to name a few) and across the US available to MIFF filmgoers first – and who doesn’t like to be first?
Founded in 1998, the Maine International Film Festival is a project of the Maine Film Center. During the 10 days of the festival, organizers show nearly 100 films and host 50 honored guests and visiting filmmakers, who host panel discussions and attend screenings of their films, giving filmgoers an incredible opportunity to hear about the art of film from those on the front lines.
