TURNER — John Pape, a Turner small business owner and veteran advocate has announced he will run for the Maine Legislature in the House of Representatives.
A veteran of the Kosovo War, Pape served 24 years in a multitude of officer positions, including a four-year command tour, senior plans officer and brigade operations officer.
Serving the community as a trustee at The William J. Rogers American Legion Post, Pape is also an active member of the Captain Frank W. Hulett Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Pape, known locally as Major Pape, began a Greenlight a Vet campaign last winter to provide a token of support to veterans. Pape has provided 700 bulbs to date, all given away for free.
Having also served six years as a Call-Firefighter, trained in FF1 and First Responder, Pape was previously a combat medical specialist when he was enlisted in the National Guard, prior to being commissioned as a second lieutenant.
He also served in the Boy Scouts of America for 25 years, rising to the rank of Eagle Scout, and was elected scoutmaster for five years. He has served on local, district, council, and national staffs.
His deep experience in leadership and negotiation skills are absolute benefits for serving in the 129th Legislature, according to Pape. He said that the Boy Scouts of America and United States Army are the best leadership labs in the world. He feels his past community service has uniquely prepared him well to serve the people of District 75 in the Legislature.
“Having the knowledge, skills and abilities that I possess along with heavy community service served will make a difference in Augusta,” said Pape.
“The 75th District, comprised of Turner, Leeds, and the southeast areas of Livermore is not like some of the other districts near us. We have many farms, and many small businesses that need to reduce their tax burdens as much possible, to encourage them to put more people to work, therefore keeping the state taxes down is very necessary. The people who live here expect their neighbors to work for their family’s well-being, and do not want more people who can work to get onto welfare programs and the highly expensive MaineCare,” said Pape.
“I would rather the state put their limited resources into vocational schools and put young people to work.” Pape continued, “We need to do a better job at protecting the truly needy, and our most vulnerable citizens, especially the elderly, and veterans, while the able-bodied need to learn to be self- sufficient.”
Pape is the owner and president of JAPELCO Electrical Contractors in Turner. He looks to replace the Honorable Jeffrey Timberlake who has met term-limits in the House.
