NEWRY — Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation, the state’s largest provider of free adaptive year-round recreational and sport opportunities, announces it will be adding new days and locations to their program calendar, offering broader adaptive program sessions closer to their “home” base beginning this summer.
New this year, the organization will be offering cycling, tennis, paddling and golf at venues within the greater Bethel area as well as continuing its program offerings at traditional venues throughout the state, include Range Ponds State Park in Poland, Back Cove Park in Portland and Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.
Maine Adaptive also encourages advanced adaptive athletes to join Team Maine Adaptive and support our summer fundraising efforts by taking part in competitive rides, paddles and road races with other organizations. This year, be sure to look for Team Maine Adaptive on the Androscoggin River (with Source to Sea) on July 14, followed by the Mollyockett Road Races July 15. Excited to partner with its neighbors, including Gould Academy and The Bethel Inn Resort, Maine Adaptive encourages community members to explore the Davis Park Trails and all the region offers in the summer season.
Although there is no deadline for registration, spaces are limited and lessons are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Established in 1982 as Maine Handicapped Skiing, Maine Adaptive proudly serves nearly 500 individuals each year. Maine Adaptive is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA, a national network of adaptive recreation programs for people with disabilities. Maine Adaptive is also a US Paralympics sport club, which supports its introductory programs as well as providing additional opportunities for development and advancement for higher level athletes who participate and volunteer in our programs.
Maine Adaptive is also a member of Access Recreation Boston, the Maine Association of Nonprofits, the Maine Outdoor Coalition, the Bethel Area Nonprofit Collaborative, the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce.
