LEWISTON – A vigil to remember people without stable homes during the holidays will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, below the “Hopeful” sign along Main Street.
The vigil is sponsored by New Beginnings, Lewiston/Auburn Alliance for Services to the Homeless, Trinity Jubilee Center and the Pleasant Street Drop-in Center, and the community is invited to attend. It is part of a national movement of cities marking National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day on or near the winter solstice, the first day of winter and the longest night of the year.
Participants may add names, photos, and candles to a temporary visual memorial to honor unhoused friends and neighbors who died in the past year, and names and photos for the visual memorial may be submitted before Dec. 15 via email to nicole@newbeginmaine.org.
Participants should bring their own flashlight or electric candle to hold, and a sign if they choose. Vigil participants will stand along both sides of Main Street with lights and signs to raise awareness about the crisis of homelessness to passersby during the evening commute. Everyone is encouraged to dress warmly. The event will be held no matter what the weather.
