LEWISTON – LA Arts and other local organizations are supporting the family of local community and arts advocate Fowsia Musse, of Auburn, who was recently shot, along with her son and sister, in an airport in Ethiopia.
Musse, executive director of Maine Community Integration, was traveling back to Somalia, her homeland, to see her sick mother after almost three decades. Her sister, who was a well-respected public servant and civic leader, died. Musse is in critical condition, with gunshot wounds to her stomach and hip and a badly broken leg. In an effort to avoid amputation of the leg, she was moved to Norway to receive medical care.
Medical costs are mounting, and she and her two children need to get back to the U.S. to heal as best they can after tragedy beset what was supposed to be a decades-in-the-planning family reunion.
LA Arts, was collaborating with Musse, with planning well underway, on a mural in downtown Lewiston. This past summer, she partnered with Portland-based artist and Lewiston Public Schools art teacher Eamon White on another downtown mural.
